Getting around Ukraine it is not a big problem, because all the travel information are well prepared and clearly marked. Although they?re given in Ukrainian or Russian language. Do not worry, in internet network you could find some usefull information in English.
If you have to make a long distance journey the best for you is to take a train. There?re very cheap, there are few kinds of carriages, in all of them there?s a conductor to make your journey safe and pleasant. There is a possibility to taste national Ukrainian home made meals and beer which you can buy from old ladies on every platform during your journey. Travelling by train is safe and quite comfortable (in sleeping carriages you will get a fresh bedding and small towel) what?s more when you travel by train you can strike up a friendship with many people from all over the Europe.
Another way to getting around Ukraine is a bus. It is the fastest way to get to certain place. I recommend busses to that kind of people who are traveling on short distances cause the roads are very narrow and full of holes. Buses are small and old, with drivers who sometimes goes mad – so for long distance travel, train will be better choice. Please note that in the Ukrainian cities can be several bus stations, including one principal and several smaller sending just suburban buses or ?marszrutka?s?.
Third way to travel between the cities is a plane. It?s the fastest way (including time to get in and out from the airport) but quite expensive. Ukrainian airlines are lines of fairly good reputation, and the level of control and security does not differ from that in Europe.
Last but not least is travelling by car. Traveling with your own car needs a bit of persistence and self- denial. As I mentioned earlier – the roads in Ukraine are not the best, although there are several major road re-surfacing of: e.g. in whole road Uzhhorod ? Lviv – Kiev or two-lane car road Kiev-Odessa. You should beware driving in the night (holes in surface), obey the speed limits (plenty of police on roads) and read carefully the maps and road signs. Preparing the journey before departure is very important so buy a good map (detailed) and plan your route at home. Marking of the roads is quite good, although in the cities leaves much to be desired (eg in Lviv).
